Air conditioner refrigerant (commonly called AC gas) is designed to last for many years because it circulates inside a sealed system. Under normal conditions, AC gas does not get consumed. If the refrigerant level becomes low, it usually indicates a leak that requires professional inspection and repair.
1. Proper Installation: A correctly installed AC with leak-free copper piping and secure connections can retain its refrigerant for 10 to 15 years or even longer without requiring a gas refill.
2. Refrigerant Leaks: The most common reason for gas loss is a refrigerant leak caused by damaged copper pipes, loose flare nuts, corrosion, or worn-out joints. In such cases, the leak must be repaired before refilling the gas.
3. Regular Maintenance: Periodic AC servicing helps identify refrigerant leaks early, improves cooling performance and prevents compressor damage caused by low gas pressure.
4. Signs of Low AC Gas: Common symptoms include weak cooling, ice formation on the indoor coil, longer cooling time, increased electricity bills and unusual hissing sounds near the refrigerant lines.
5. Gas Refill Requirement: An AC should only be recharged after confirming a refrigerant leak or after major repairs involving the cooling circuit. Simply topping up gas without fixing the leak is not recommended.
In general, if your AC is functioning properly and there are no leaks, the refrigerant should last throughout the life of the air conditioner without needing frequent refilling.
